Cuenca, Ecuador
April 25 - June 30 [2021]
I chose Cuenca to begin this leg of travel because it was considered a hidden gem of the Andes representing quality at value. For the most part, it lived up to the hype. Cuenca is a 400 year old Spanish Colonial City nestled in a mountain valley 8500 feet above sea level showcasing four rivers, twelve historic cathedrals, cobblestone streets and urban textures typical of many European cities. In fact, the entire historic center is registered on UNESCO's world heritage site.
Cuenca's climate is unique requiring no heating or air conditioning for those inhabiting the valley. Afternoon clouds are dramatic and a work of art in themselves. The economy is local and very reminiscent of pre-corporate United States mid 20th century. The air is clean, food is fresh, plentiful, mostly organic and grown year round. Cuenca is inexpensive and very livable.
My time in Cuenca lasted a little over two months because I wanted to establish a familiarity with the environment before moving forward. Future stays will vary in duration but at a minimum, three weeks per city. Ultimately, I’ll fine tune the ideal length of stay and stick with it unless I find a place that won’t let me go. Time will tell.
